Have you guys seen the new drama Viki is producing? The one about the white girl who gets sucked into a kdrama? Thoughts?

I watched two episodes and found them funnier than I had expected (my expectations were quite low though). I wasn't so pleased with the acting of the main male charakter. And I had the feeling that the series is more directed towards an american audience? I liked the actress of the girl.

Back to k-drama: still suffering from Six Flying Dragons withdrawal. Don't know if I will ever recuperate...

And now I'm going to miss Hong-nan, too. She was such a memorable character!

Is there anything airing with a good female character at the moment?

Ms. Temper & Nam Jung-gi. Ms. Temper is a great character, but I don't think you'll like her (if you are going to like her at all) the same way you liked Hong-nan.

I like Lee Yo-won in this role because she does what she does best - person with dry/no expression :)

Ms. Temper really suits her style of acting. I think she can be good when she does emotional stuff as well since she's exceptionally good with her crying scenes. I get that she can be a little dry at times, but I prefer that to overly emotional acting (I won't name any actors, but it's mainly the guys). Her characters are mostly strong though, and that's what I like. Queen Seon-deok, Choi Seo-yoon and now Ms. Temper are all competent female characters who are not waiting for a knight in shining armor to rescue them. That being said, I think Lee Yo-won regularly gets top billing in her dramas so that may be why she gets these roles.

0

I remember her from Blue Fog days (and Daemang/ great hope) and never been impressed with her/her expression. The only time I thought she did something different (being cheerful) was 49 days when the other girl was in her body.
Then again who knows maybe someday I might change my mind about her.

@ Liina

Good female characters as in strong, capable and with a heart? Now showing ... there's Ms Temper and Nam Jung Ki and Mrs Cop 2 is not too bad. :)

Another great thing about Ms. Temper and Nam Jung-gi is that ALL the female characters are pretty great.

Even if you don't agree with their choices or you don't ~LOVE~ them, they are all very complex, human characters. The drama does a wonderful job of developing side-plots involving the supporting characters. I can't say enough good stuff about it! ^_^

0

@Andrea: I don't need to love them for the goodness of their heart or something like that. Complex and human that's just perfect! :) - I just want to have the possibility to relate to them from one female to another.
I don't think I'm a bad person but I just can't see myself in multiple job working but still always smiling being kind to everybody Candy. And I don't want a prince either. I want a partner. For me and for my female main protagonist!

I haven't watched Twenty Again. Does it make a very big issue out of the age difference between the main protagonist and the other students?

Required fields are marked *

It does and it doesn't.

I mean, the protagonist is a 40-something ahjumma in college, so her fellow students DEFINITELY notice, and there is a little tension at first. But the way her fellow students come to accept her, and she them, is one of my favorite through-lines in the plot.

I'd say the show gives this issue as much attention as it is realistically due, but it doesn't go overboard with the fish-out-of-water theme.

What?!?!?! This white girl never thought she'd see the day when there was a white woman in a K-drama!!!

I have actually plotted out elaborate reasons why a white woman (or any non-Korean woman, actually) would be in a dram. It's one of the things I do before I fall asleep! My current favorite plotline is:

Our white/black/Hispanic/non-Korean-Asian heroine is born on a military base in South Korea. She and a local boy become childhood friends; she learns to speak Korean from him, and teaches him English. Her family is moved back to the USA, but years later, she returns to (what feels like) the country of her birth (maybe she's teaching English?) and they run into each other again. Sparks fly, but can they overcome racism and each family's resistance to find love? /endscene

Oh, and there have been non Asians in the dramas lately (not just as the evil protagonist or the "American" businessman). Warm and Cozy had a Nigerian (I think he was Nigerian) actor speaking Korean. And Bride of the Century had a white girl who spoke perfect Korean because she had been raised by a Korean family in America. I like that, because it shows how international the Hallyu Wave has become.

Moorim School had both more than one non-asian actor and they were both good guys.

Playful Kiss featured a non-asian actress, but only for a few episodes towards the end, she was a really sweet character though.

Happy Weekend . . . .
I finished Moon River (T-Drama) : it's fun, I don't have any expectation for the plot anyway. The whole chaebol power is simply just there without much threat as the show want us to believe. Toe Sock!!
What I liked about the drama is the relationship development of the lead. That's their strength, the couple talk and show their perspective, they said what they can tolerate and what they feel even when they realize it's not the better choice.
They are simple, strong, cute, they are made for each other because they care so much. It's like the song locked away get all answer yes with explanation for a better life. I still think the 2nd lead has GPS on the female lead cause he always can find her in a minutes.
Wherever and whenever she is happen to stop, cry or have a rest.

Then I went a journey to find nice male lead to land on Love Around : This is a very good love stories at least up to ep 7. The male lead is really the perfect guy, not because he is always there but because he has conscience and love. The plot is slow burn and mostly come from the past between mafia X police.
The story is about ex-Mafia son get close and then has relationship with retired police officer's daughter that own a Radio Station. She seems to have really bad prejudice towards the ex-mafia and spread many rumor about him from the radio, angered the ex-mafia that try to buy her radio, the son then come to find the peace solution. She meets the ex-mafia son and became friends before the problem arise and without knowing his real identity.
If I have those absolute boyfriend technology, I'll make one based on the male lead. He understand what he need to do, he respect her, cool headed, know right and wrong, funny, skilled fighter and on top of that, he is handsome and well build. Maybe he'll change but he just so great atm, like Yoo Shi Jin without cheesy flirty line (this trait is both strength and weakness for YSJ, lol)
He has short coming about personal space but he is a nice guy which is so rewarding, the lead meet as friend not bickering friends or hate each other but real good friend.

I watched the trailer of My Amazing Boyfriend (C-drama) : which maybe the MLFAS remake? the male lead look identical to kim soo hyun imo. On the other hand, the story is more believable (at least on what I saw in trailer).
It's about a monster (sort of, he does't even know what himself is) that wake up after 100 years when his ice coffin that transported by truck crashed with the superstar/female lead car. He has the ability for healing wounds with his blood and he save the girl as 1st (?) human he want to save because she freed him.
He lost part of his memory due to long sleep and lived with the girl while try to recover the memory since he only knew her. He has enemy that use his blood to lived long and they have a problem about the monster not saving the enemy's mom from illness years ago. The monster has...

The character is quite the same with MLFAS but the plot makes so much sense, it has something more than romance and good looking alien trapped in celebrity life.

And for anyone that miss Argus : he has story with SM Station song by Kim Bum Soo-Pain Poem.
Marriage Contract : it’s beautiful, touching, and I am glad I watch it. One of the best melodrama in the recent year.

I recently finished My name is Kim Sam Soon and wondered where have these recent kdramas gone wrong.
MNIKSS had so many feels and it was an amazing mix of fantasy and reality. It drags the viewer into their world.
The one drama that I beleive has the same aspect is Marriage Contract, no other comes to my mind. The dramas in 2000's were so different from the dramas these days.

On another note i guess marriage contract is going for a sad ending or maybe a more believable ending would be hye soo nor dying but neither being entirely cured. Either ways im fine because they have build up the show this way. Curing hye soo completely will be not so beleivable.

I have also been checking drama specials lately. They are atleast short and better produced than web dramas. Page turner and splash splash love were amazing. Can someone recommenf other good drama specials?

Hi, wapz...

Just finished watching MNIKSS myself on 4/23 after watching CITY HALL a couple of weeks ago, and reading samsooki's dandy recaps for both dramas, along with most of the comments.

[Adulatory Aside: Yay, samsooki, and your City Hall recap team! Thank you! And thank you JavaBeans & friends for making Kdramas and movies intelligible to English speakers. I deeply appreciate your insights into Korean culture and history. Thanks to you guys, I'm completely hooked, and loving it!]

I really enjoyed Kim Sun-A's performances in both shows. It was refreshing to see mature women characters with functioning gray matter who march to their own drummers, have a sense of self and a lot of heart, and pursue their own paths in the world. Oh, and who have some meat on their bones.

The OST and background music for SAM SOON was terrific, and really added to the emotional impact. "Beautiful Person," based on the Hermann Hesse poem, blew my doors off. I'd somehow managed to miss hearing about the Elton John/Tim Rice Broadway musical AIDA; now "My Strongest Suit" (ep. 10) refuses to leave my noggin. Lots of good music in CITY HALL, too. Useobwa (Smile) by Chae Dong Ha is another Kdrama Ohrwurm.

A suggestion for you:

About a month ago I tracked down MY SON, a 2007 film with Ryu Deok-Hwan in the title role; his performance as King Gong-Min was for me one of the best parts of FAITH. Cha Seung-Won co-stars as the father, a convicted murderer serving a life sentence, who gets a one-day leave to visit his family after 15 years of good behavior. Their performances got me where I live. The story is not as bleak as one might expect. There are a couple of fantasy interludes that reminded me of WELCOME TO DONGMAKGOL (in which RDH played a soldier).

I just about got whiplash a few weeks later when I started watching CITY HALL and realized that CSW is the leading man. ;-)

Enjoy!

Happy friday beanies!

How are you all? I had a relaps off illness this week (yay fever!) so I've been rewatching Life is beautiful for the x number of times. Still like this show, even with it's crazy family dynamics at times.

Ironically enough watching the drama coexisted with the kids at work being in a mysterious makjang drama of their own. Suddenly you had multiple mothers, bad step-fathers, randomly appearing siblings, etc happening.

Today two of the girls ended up having this argument over one of the youngest toddlers:
Girl 1: "This is my baby!"
Girl 2: "NO! IT isn't! He is mine!"
Girl 1: "But I want to play with him, therefore he is mine!"
Girl 2: "No! He can't be yours, he is mine!"
*Manin carefully picks up toddler and moves away while fight continues*

The interactions between the characters are great. The actors are great. SJK's charm is great.

But you can't get really sucked into the story because every episode has moments where you think- that is so darn unrealistic!- and you remember they are all just playing pretend, as opposed to really feeling wrapped up in their world and conflict.
So it's good for eye candy, and the couple interactions.

I don't think I wasted my time watching but I don't think it was amazing because it didn't make me really immersed into their world. Which was sad because the cinematography was pretty and well filmed.
Worth a watch for sure but don't have too high expectations ?
Just my 2 cents!

No prob! Actually I got hooked initially because of SJK's charm and it was exciting for the first couple of episodes (falling in love! Badass charming soldier and plucky headstrong female surgeon! Finally a strong modern female lead and a male lead that was charming and NICE from the start). But the excitement fizzled out more because of lack of plot (which made the lack of realism worse) which couldn't be salvaged despite the great acting and everything else I mentioned. But yeah it is worth checking out. Hope this helps!

you make it sound like pretty much all 'idol drama' where you really do not care about the story as long as you see the two lead together. But on a more serious note, any drama that keeps shocking you out of its own fantasy world is not a good one, unless it like 100% done for laughs and even then it not really a clever thing to be doing.

Hi Manin,

Yes Descendant of the Sun (DOTS) is definitely worth the watch for:
1) great cinematography and scenery
2) nice examination of the concepts of duty vs honor vs love as depicted by 2-3 couples (can include the Dr Daniel and Nurse Ye Hwa couple too maybe as the symbols of love in the midst of duty)
3) great OSTS
4) the pretty boys and girls

The the couple togetherness was not half bad. Their conversations were good and the relationships flow and development did make sense even if other things might not have.

It was also nice to catch little clues and hints of unspoken things by what the camera would rest on for a while. Do try it and tell us what you think. :)

In the case of DotS, I really think you should better try out the first two episodes for yourself. If you get hooked by the first episodes you will like it till the end. If they don't do anything for you, you don't need to watch any further, you also won't get hooked in the later episodes. If you ask others you will probably get all answers from "You have to watch it at all cost" to "Stay far away from it" and then you won't be any wiser than before.

How should I describe it? I think DOTS is a relaxing watch, lol. Like what everyone says, it has beautiful cinematography and gorgeous main leads. It doesn't have a complicated plot (it doesn't have one), it's easy to follow. Usually when something happens it gets resolved in the next episode. But then again, not much happens at all. You can watch it when you're really tired and you want to switch off your brain. But even then, I found the scene where Song Joong Ki jumped out of bed right after getting revived from cardiac arrest (due to GUNSHOT WOUNDS) a little too ridiculous. It really depends on what's your threshold for light fluffy dramas.

Ha ha, Manin. Love the toddler story. At first I just read the dialog and thought, "This was in a K-Drama?" Then I had to read your entire post.

I think you should try DotS. There is no real plot because the story is about people who work in those types of emergency situations. I kept looking for plot and then as I worked with the dialog, I realized the show was in their discussions of their philosophies and how they came to understand each other better.

Watched Splish Splash Love and enjoyed it thoroughly! Wish they had more short 2-6 episode long dramas! Thanks to Sancheezy for the rec! ?

Didn't have decent wifi for much of the trip so I rewatched old stuff- You're Beautiful put me in the mood to watch Jackpot- should I? Seems like there are mixed reviews.

Didn't bother to watch the DOTS specials because I'm still slightly bitter about What Might Have Been A Life Changing Drama If Only The Writer Had Thought Of The Plot.

Also, want to ask if I should watch Liar Game? I'm a big scaredy cat. It sounds more... potentially sinister than the synopsis makes it sound. It's not like Saw (the movie) right? Hi Everyone and Happy OT

I'm just back from a 'little' and I mean 'leeetle' art exhibition by the graduating class of a pre-uni and it was thoughtful and introspective and inspiring, also of course, very creative. I was great to see the kids being a little feted and acknowledged as they head off to various unis. They look so grown up now!

On the drama front, thanks to @aqua❤JCW I had a bit of fun voting on the Annual Dramafever Awards. The link below:

Enjoy! :)

Hi Gaeina Lee

Yes, I'm all prepped for this weekend ... failing a power outage/lack of battery or PC fail, I should be joining you in tears and smiles for the last 2 episodes of MContract.

I mentioned in the MC post... not only tissues but pillows (to sob loudly into / scream into) ... and come to think of it, I should add lots of water to drink cos this heatwave with the tears is gonna cause me serious dehydration! LOL!

It is unfortunate when this situation happens. I'm sure everyone involved in making dramas works very hard and intentionally do not set out to make a low-rated show. But low ratings/viewership/bad critiques do happen. ..... On a bit of a different note, yet somewhat related, it's always interesting to see what the viewers gravitate towards at any given time. That always opens up a lot of questions
and fascinating topics.

It makes me sad too, especially when I watch a stellar drama and then learn it wasn't popular when it aired.

But I think that really ties into the second part of your comment--what people want to watch also depends on what they watched right before it. ie. After Signal I couldn't handle anything too intense, so I re-watched a lot of Pinocchio and You're Beautiful before picking up Marriage Contract. After MC, I'll probably need something light and fluffy again, so in this next round of shows I might not like a certain drama as much because it's too heavy for coming off of what I just watched.

I see what you mean. I finished Signal last weekend, and I feel like I just want to keep re-watching it. Finally I decided to watch Oh My Ghostess [I missed tons of kdramas last year] and that is working out well.

I think of 2 measurement for drama, rating hit and critical acclaim, time will tell how people perception about a drama in term of critical acclaim.
Popular thing is trend that show what the viewer wants and like at the moment.
CBA really picked a bad slot, I wished it could be higher but on the other hand I am curious on why they has decreasing viewership.
Maybe the viewer was tired of the redundant gag they convey like many of us tired of jerk type of character, maybe the story doesn't picked up much, maybe the makjang look-alike story is too familiar for them, and perhaps other reason aside the competition, since many drama can picked up the interest later.
Secret on 2013 start with N/R and rise above heirs in rating and acclaim,
Kill Me Heal 2015 has okay star and negative pre-produce reps but rise to the buzz hype later,
Protect the boss suddenly just rise to the tops, even GMB rise steadily despite DoTS hype.

I think viewer in diff place has diff situation when at that time/moment they view things differently.
I watched gag concert, SNL Korea and the laugh is pretty much the same one given in CBA.
I think CBA is good drama but maybe it doesn't work for the audience over there because they think it's not that unusual like many cop procedural show deemed normal in western viewers.

Hi Everyone! ....... I hope you are all doing well today.

Watched this week:

Six Flying Dragons - I finally finished watching this! ....... Enjoyed it from beginning to end. What an incredible viewing experience! Characters to be remembered for a long time to come.

Descended From The Sun - Finished this also. While not spectacular, you can't deny that Song Joong-ki charm.

Mrs. Cop 2 - Tuned in to watch ep 10, just to see what's going on. All I know is, Kim Bum was in an interrogation room for a bit, then he was released, later, someone noticed he had a scratch on his wrist. That's it.

Marriage Contract - Just started watching the first 2 eps. Curious to see Lee Seo-jin because I haven't seen him in ages. ....... So far, so good.

That's all for now. ....... Everyone take care and have a great Friday!

I can't bring myself to watch Mrs Cop. I keep clicking on it and then I just can't go on. So I just click off and close the browser. This is one of the few times where I find myself unable to connect with a kdrama character. Maybe it's because the drama wants us to believe she's a wonderful passionate crusader and they have all that music to force us to see how dang dramatic she is...but --since I don't connect to her-- all that musical cueing just pushes me away from her.

Lee Seo-jin is adorable. In fact, all the forty-something ahjusshi actors are doing super great this season. Between Seojinnie, Yoon Sang Hyun, the actor in Neighborhood lawyer, and the lead in Memory, they're all pretty much rocking their roles.

Hello beanies!! Hope all are doing well =)

Update: It's another week and I still have my molar! Am I feeling better? Sort of. I almost feel like I've become desensitized to the pain of this tooth that I don't know what normal feels like...I'm gingerly chewing on it. My dentist wants to take a "wait and see" approach with it before doing anything else to it. To make things worse, I feel like the other side of my mouth is acting up because I'm eating on the one side so much. Blarg, I think I'm just going to go with mashed/puree foods and avoid using my teeth AT ALL. *cries*

On the other hand...I'm still continuing The Journey of Flower (Cdrama) .... I realized there's 82 episodes (82!!)...and I'm only on 19....but gosh darn it, it's still got me watching (I'm surprised)!

Dropped (again):

Jackpot - I actually went back to watch it since I heard good things about episode 7, but only the part where he (well, and Seol-im) freed the slaves was remotely interesting. Episode 8 seemed pretty pointless to me. I still don't get what this drama wants to do and so I'm dropping it once again.

Entertainer - It's unfair to judge the drama at this stage, but if I must it's damn freaking boring. The first 2 episodes is just about Ji Sung's fall from grace, and his struggle to find a new idol group. Well, it is as boring as it sounds. There are people saying that it's dark because it involved things like sexual assault (it's a false charge by the way) but they're not even dealing with it. It's just a plot device (a poorly contrived one at that). I can pretty much foresee what will happen with that plotline already.

On Hye-ri's acting, I thought her crying scenes were, ironically, devoid of emotions. She's just crying, but she didn't seem really sad. It was awkward to watch, but she didn't bother me in her other scenes. Kang Min-hyuk was just wooden, but there isn't much to do with his character anyway so I can't fault him. I totally see why Park Bo-gum rejected the role so I'm perplexed why JS decided to do the drama at all.

Currently watching:

Ms. Temper - Well, I've talked about it enough. It's great and I love Ms. Temper (and Woojoo).

I find that there are not many dramas I actually stay with. I always wonder if it's my problem though, since so many people seem to enjoy the ones I don't (like Marriage Contract). I realised I'm more inclined to watching dramas centered around a female character (or with strong female characters), but I quite like FTLY. I like dramas without lovelines, but there are times I just wish there'd be a loveline (EoG). I guess I'm pretty hard to please.

Have you seen Dal-ja's Spring? From what you said of your drama tastes, I think you'd like it. It is one of my top three dramas!

It's definitely female-centered. Not just on the female lead, but also on her female friends and co-workers. All of the characters are presented as flawed, decent people who grow and change for the better over the course of the drama.

It is also a romance, with Lee Min-ki as the lead! The relationship he has with Dal-ja is very respectful and loving.

This is an older drama (from...2007 or 2009, I believe?), but I have re-watched it multiple times and it doesn't get old. Highly recommend if you're looking for a hearty, heart-warming drama that respects its female characters.

I watched and dropped it before the final episodes. (I may have returned to finish it but I can't remember). I don't think I liked it all that much as well. Partly because everyone was gushing about Ji Soo, but I didn't think his character was interesting at all. Towards the end the writer was kind of doing fan service too and so I dropped the show.

I conclude that I really am hard to please.

0

Oh dear, I feel you! I sometimes think something is just wrong with me because I so seldomly get into the dramas everyone is raving about. And I drop lots of dramas too. Somehow I think I'm just not made for k-dramas at all! But somehow I still love them. Sandglass, Sangdo, Joseon X-Files, Conspiracy in the Court, Vampire Prosecutor 1, Signal, Angry Mom, Six Flying Dragons, School 2013, Comrades, Sassy Girl Chunhyang, Seodongyo, Mawang that would be my list of favorites. I dropped DotS, I dropped Iris, I dropped Chuno, I dropped Dae Jang Geum, I dropped The Princess' Man, I had certain problems with Queen Seondeok (o.k. the main problem was that it later shifted its focus from Deokmans character to Bidams character whom I didn't find interesting...), I dropped All In, I dropped Full House, I neither liked Palace nor the end of Coffee Prince (liked the first 14 episodes though) and so on. :( With that list of likes and dislikes I probably can never be friends with any other k-drama fan! :( :( :(

Rats. What is it? Do writers of K-Dramas have a special "trope clause?" If you stick a wrist grab in, do you get a bonus? And is there a bonus for amnesia? cancer? a woman doing a WIDE-EYED kiss?

Sheesh.

Good morning! Happy Friday! I hope you all have reasons to smile today, because smiling is good for the soul. Graduation is 832 hours away, and life couldn't be better.

Watched this week:
Marriage Contract. Yippee! I was worried I had started to late to be caught up for the finale. Oh my goodness, I'm so glad, too. I would have died waiting all those weeks--and I even got a happy cliffhanger, not a heartbreaking one! Favorite highlights: Eun Sung's acting, Hye-soo's friend and Ji-hoon's dimples. But seriously, they're gorgeous. If she dies... I just hope they have enough time to be happy and fulfilled together, and that Eun-sung handles it well.

Entertainer: I think I'm going to like this show. At the moment Seok-ho is a rather distasteful word, that is true--but he's a likable one. Plus they played ABBA for their opening scene, so they scored brownie points for that.

That's it for this week! Happy Friday, and I hope you all find reasons to smile this weekend! :)

Ms.Temper & NJG: a strong female lead which i ilke, the brother Bon Gi is not useless as i magened at first, he's very helpful and he's always at the right time for help

Five Children: oh this drama is so cute the female lead is so adorable i like every one in this drama

Good Bye Mr Black: it's becoming more and more unpredictable and complicated but so good, the villain Sung Jay nailed his character he's a talented actor

Vampire detective: so thrilling and mysterious the cases are connected to the main villain

Monster: I stopped at ep3 I don't know why, but i am planning to continue

I started on Entertainer but I didn't like the first episode it was boring, I forwarded some parts i just kept watching to stare at Ji Sung, i will wait a couple more episodes when the story build up some more to decide if i will continue....sorry Ji Sung

Entertainer is boring so far, but I thought maybe it is setting the stage for something I little more fun. I too am watching for Ji Sung. He's brilliant and all kinds of pretty.
After watching the first and second episode I think Hyeri was a very poor casting choice. Hopefully she jells better with her role as the episodes progress.

Required fields are marked *

Entertainer: I'm going to give it a couple more episodes to see if I can continue warming up to it. Episode 2 is starting to bring pieces and people together better, however I feel there's a certain level of over-acting and over-reacting in the show that takes me out of the story. Can't seem to stay engaged in it in the same way with many other first 2 episodes. I usually find that more care is put into the early episodes to grab and hold the audience (and then it can maybe go downhill but with a captive audience still in tow to know how things pan out). This is one of the rare times that the first episodes do not hold my attention entire.

Min Hyuk is more expressive and better in the Ep 2 and Ji Sung is getting more subtle, but Hye Ri looks like she's trying too hard or something. Chae Jung Ahn, however, is great. Liked her in Yong Pal and really like her here.

What I would have liked, for a change, is no loveline at all... just a show focusing on 2nd chances for people misjudged and beating the odds. If there has to be a loveline, I'd prefer it with the older actors together, they seem so much more suitable than the awkward Ji Sung-Hye Ri pairing. Let's see how it goes.

Required fields are marked *

Entertainer: Sigh.. I so do agree with you about the loveline and Hyeri. In terms of acting Hyeri still has a loong loong way to go :(
I rather like the premise of the show though, so I too am going to give it a couple more episodes. "I remember you" was one of the shows that didn't pick up until the third or fourth episode and boy after that it was such a lovely drama and I was so glad I stuck it out through the first two episodes!

So Who knows ?At its worst, Entertainer will turn out to be a pleasant show (and not something like Moorim School*shudders*) because I have faith in Ji Sung's and Chae Jung Ah's acting.

For The Emperor - I'll be honest. I still don't understand why I should care. I do miss Lee Min Ki badly and Park Sung Woong's such a badass ahjussi. The game-fixing was kinda interesting though...

Mood of the Day - I found it so-so. It's pretty, of course, but it irked me that they glazed over the fact that female lead was cheating.

C'est Si Bon - Did not expect that I would be invested in this. It made me feel warm. Love love loved the music. Great cast too. But I think that the friendship between the trio lacked some oomph plus they sidelined two-thirds of the trio halfway through. So the betrayal or the reunion couldn't have much impact. The romance had my heart fluttering though. The whole cast is awesome! I think I've forgiven evil chief(?) from Signal.

I Remember You - Well that was kinda cracktastic. At first, it felt so-so to me. Next thing I knew I was halfway through the drama. It was a breeze. Before watching I thought that Hello Monster was a better title than the generic I Remember You. Looking at it now, IRY fits the drama more. It's a healing answer to the silent pleas and hopes of our maybe forgotten characters. Kudos to the writer and the director for making a tightly-plotted show and fusing the genres so so well, striking the right balance. Also to the amazing cast, who played their characters to a T. Awesome Ji-an is awesome. Dang, how am I supposed to watch sucky shows for my oppas now? Lol.

Hello Beanies!

I'd like to ask your advice on what dramas I should watch next. I'm currently watching Ms. Temper and Nam Jung-gi and loving it, but since it only airs on Fridays and Saturdays...\( ≧Д≦)/...I'd like to find another drama to watch to fill the time.

I like dramas with complex, strong female characters who remain strong throughout the drama. I find that in a lot of dramas, the heroine starts out awesome and individuated and then mysteriously morphs into a banal, vapid vehicle for the hero's development. See Secret Garden or Aarang and the Magistrate. I'd like to avoid those dramas. I also love dramas that show strong friendships or working relationships between women, instead of pitting them against each other.

I'm also really NOT into anything remotely rapey. I stopped watching What's Up, Fox? because the first time they have sex, the heroine is black-out drunk and to me, that's rape. I was very unnerved by the "trap her in the bed" scene in Secret Garden. I thought the Jung/Seol relationship in Cheese in the Trap was borderline abusive. [PS - I'm not really looking to debate these perspectives: if you liked these dramas, that is great! I am not criticizing you. I personally did not like them.] I can deal with jealousy in my drams (jealousy done well is delicious!), but I don't like wrist-grabbing or male heroes who exhibit emotionally abusive behavior or dictate the lives of the heroines.

I'm most interested in dramas with romantic plotlines, though I'd like to branch out (I loved Angry Mom, for example). I love (LOVE) friends-to-lovers dramas and forced cohabitation tropes. I love it when dramas show realistic, adult relationships where (*gasp!*) the heroine looks like she enjoys kissing the hero. Noona romances make my heart sing, though I'm just as happy with...oppa romances (I guess that's what you'd call them?). I've never watched a "true" saegeuk -- the closest I got was Aarang and the Magistrate. I'd be open to suggestions there (although I will commit blasphemy here and say that I think most men...don't look great in those Joseon era hats ¯\_(ツ)_/¯).

Some dramas that I have watched and loved are: Dal-ja's Spring, 9 End 2 Outs, City Hall, Coffee Prince, Shut Up Flower Boy Band, You From Another Star, Healer (oh my God I loved this one), Answer Me 1997, Oh My Ghostess, I Hear Your Voice, Ojakgyo Brothers, It's Okay; It's Love, Greatest Love, Twenty Again, and Angry Mom.

If you have read this far, kahmsahmnida! I look forward to your suggestions. ^_^

Delightful Girl Chun Hyang : forced to married in high school because of some event (not pregnancy) , lived together (I think?), romance with the female lead had a career and strong willed.

Dream high : the story of underdog and growing up, I like the story and they all lived together.

I need romance 2011 : about a couple , adult relationship, , dating life and it all executed well, reminds me a bit of Dalja's spring

Marriage not Dating : fake couple to married, fun and funny rom-com

Prosecutor Princess : Sassy prosecutor and her life meet shady guy

for saeguk
maybe
queen Hyeon man is a good start as fusion genre, Three Musketer
but the real saeguk perhaps like Queen Seok Deok, Hwang Jin Yi, Dae Jang Geum, Sungkyungkwan Scandal Ligh hearted), The Legend, Six flying
Dragon
, Saeguk is all about the story build up in 1st few episode.

Sungkyungkwan Scandal came to my mind too.

You didn't mention any family dramas, but they tend to have strong females. I liked A Little Love Never Hurts for the women characters. Lots of different types. Strong women who go through a crisis and doubt themselves and then work it out.

You did mention Secret Garden, which was about a woman who was considered a feral alley cat and then was tamed. That bed scene was disturbing, but at least he didn't rape her. He never did and when they married, she was in charge of the bedroom scene. So there were some redeeming qualities to that story.

OMG I haven't seen someone recommend Sassy Girl Chun Hyang and Prosecutor Princess in the same comment.

*holds hand out* Let's be friends.

BTW @Andrea, check out Yoona's Street. She's a female "genius" pickpocket living in a compound with gangsters when a nice guy rents a room there not knowing what kind of "job" the residents have. Craziness ensues.

Thank you, @Sancheezy, @ktiep, and @mary! I really appreciate your suggestions.

I have seen Marriage Not Dating (loved Han Groo!) and Sassy/Delightful Girl Chun Hyang. There were a lot of things I liked about S/DGCH, especially this song from the OST: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fuWu0g1zFCc (I Love You 사랑해요). Do y'all remember that song? Aigoo, so good!

Unfortunately, the bad guy in S/DGCH did not get enough of a comeuppance for me to really enjoy the drama. I felt like he got off with a slap on the wrist, even though he seriously scarily stalked Chun Hyang, to the point where she changed identities and moved cities. And yet, in the end, she forgives him? Arrrgh, I found that really frustrating >_<.

I think I will give Yoo-na's Street and Sungkyungkwan Scandal a try. Thank you so much for your recommendations, and I apologize for my late response!

Hi Andrea!

Six Flying Dragon is the only drama that comes up when i read strong female character. It has bunch of them. But it's saeguk and 50 eps long so talks about commitment here. But i assure you, totally worth it.

I love your already-watched list and enjoy most of them. Here is my suggestion hope it suits your taste

Signal - strong interesting female character, albeit limited romance and serious storyline.

The Lover - a bit like omnibus drama with sitcom-like storyline (?) revolving cohabitation couple. It is so realistic you won't believe it. I find it funny, ridiculous and somewhat thought-provoking.

Punch - again, another serious drama but the character development is done so well; and females here, be it good or evil, they are all badass.

Splash splash love - sorry for the lack of romance, i rarely watch them but you shud try this if you haven't. One of the best thing imo.

Your taste in dramas seems so much like my own! And so with you on the men in Joseon era hats. Even Kim Soo Hyun couldn't pull it off.

Highly recommended (as in, they're forever in my top 3):

I Remember You - The actors and their chemistry is off the charts, it has the bromance to rule them all and it also has some no-too-klichéed romance. It could be both funny and heartbreaking. (I'm usually a big scaredy cat, but even though this could be creepy, it was in a way that never gave me nightmares or anything.)

The Lover - Hilarious! So realistic, klichée-less and full of female leads who aren't dragged around by the wrist. It's THE drama to watch when you're sick of all the man-childs, unintelligent female leads and wrist-grabbing.

Other recommended dramas:

Heart to Heart - a really sweet and completely underrated romance whose characters are sweet and dorky, but feel more adult than the usual man-child/teen-girl kind of kdrama adults.

Modern Farmer - Noona romance meets weird humor. Main female lead isn't a pushover and while she does have vulnerability, the hopelessly helpless in this drama are actually the main guys ha! It's not a show I could bingewatch, but it's great for a fun hour when you just want to feel good. It's in quite a different style to most dramas though, at least in the beginning, so it took me a couple of episodes to get used to, but then I loved it. (Also worth it just for Lee Hongki, Park Min Woo and Kwak Dong Yeon. For the acting! Not just the looks (although that doesn't hurt of course lol!))

The Flatterer - I wouldn't dare to get on the female lead's bad side in this one! It's a fun webdrama that's deliciously weird, but still has a little ordinary romance as a sidestory.

Come Back Ahjussi - Had a great female lead (though she was technically a guy?) and Honey Lee had potential as a more strong female lead as well. Felt very fresh and different, though it definitely had it's flaws.

Sorry for the novel lol! I hope it can help you find some new favorites (: Actually, looking at the list, they're all pretty underrated dramas, they could use the love haha.

HA! I just stared at his perfect sugar lips the whole time to distract myself from his gat. :P

*squeal* It's so awesome to find someone with similar drama tastes! Thank you for your suggestions. I'll be sure to keep an eye out for your reviews and comments in the future now that I know we like the same things. ^_^

I will definitely check out The Lover and I Remember You. I love bromance and romance-without-the-clichés!

Now that you suggested it, I remember that I was actually watching Heart to Heart...and then stopped, for some reason? I don't know why: I liked the characters, especially the female lead! I will say that the psychiatrist isn't my faaaaaavorite male lead, and I think I am also unfairly biased against that actor because I hated his character in What's Up, Fox?. He's a bit pouty in H2H too, which isn't helping me to differentiate him from the rapey-manbaby that he played in WUF. I should pick up H2H again though, because I do want to see the heroine's continued progress (and maybe the hero gets better)!

I'll also check out The Flatterer. Where can I find webdramas, and are they generally translated into English?

The romance in Signal made me squee so much. I mean, because it's so limited, I live for that moment when LJH finally starts getting worried for her, etc. lol.

I am definitely going to check out Signal (the amount of good press it has gotten in this Open Thread alone is enough for me to check it out), and I will also give The Lover and Splash Splash Love a try!

I actually watched a lot of Punch, though never finished it. I wasn't a huge fan of the endless plot twists -- there were like, 37 of them per episode, and I couldn't keep up. @_@ You're totally right about the female characters though: they were awesome and complex.

Thanks again for your comment, and I apologize for my delayed response!

Miss Korea has a great female lead character (+ three other strong women, I can think of). And, both the romantic story lines have men who respect women. The male lead is ass-y at times but in a very realistic way (and he is not a chaebol - hallelujah!) and you see him learn & grow. There is one move towards that beginning that's pretty sh***y, but you see him regret that immediately.

I started watching the drama because of Lee Sun Kyun and 'cos it's the same writer/director as Pasta. But, I was also a bit wary 'cos of the plot - beauty pageant alert! I was very pleasantly surprised about that. Even though I still don't like pageants, the show did make me appreciate the hard work and emotional investment that goes into it.

Further plus-es:
Lee Sung-Min as an adorable gangster (his is the second romantic storyline ...with a female researcher)

(if you like the plot line of Ms. Temper) the male lead is the director of a small cosmetics company, which has problems somewhat similar to those of Lovely cosmetics!

it's set in 1997, during the IMF crisis... so it's got a few history lessons

DB has re-capped it, or part of it anyway, I think :)

and awesome OST...there are three songs that I particularly loved and I am still listening to them on a loop a year later! This is my favourite:

PS. Of the shows you listed, I like all of those that I have watched.

But, I have a soft spot for What's Up, Fox? I agree that their first sexual encounter was rape. Totally! Considering their sibling-like relationship, there had to be some dramatic event that would trigger the romance - I wish it hadn't been this. Or that, they should have at least addressed it. Or, maybe both could have been really really drunk! Otherwise, there's no excuse for why he didn't leave the room when she started getting it on (as it were). Having said that, I found their relationship - the struggle to not get into one - really fascinating, and very different from anything I've watched. The drama had many other problems too - the annoying sister/best friend, the ending (gah!)... but it has stayed with me. That's one show I really wish DB had re-capped, so we could have discussed more.

PPS. Going back to recommendations: The Woman Who Still Wants to Marry has really cool female leads too. It's a bit Sex-and-the-City'ish, but they make it work. Oh, there's Kim Bum too - it's a noona romance :) And, it has a couple of nice songs.

Ooooo! Thank you for that detailed review of Miss Korea! I will definitely check it out.

I was also a bit wary ‘cos of the plot – beauty pageant alert!

This is exactly why I haven't checked it out yet, even though it's got a pretty good rating on Dramabeans! I am really leery of any dramas where the main focus is beauty or beauty pageants, because there is a lot in (what I see/know of) Korean female beauty standards that makes me really uncomfortable. That's why I won't watch Birth of a Beauty or She Was Beautiful or 200-Pound Beauty; I am afraid that the fat-shaming and "ugly"-shaming will be too much for me. But! I am willing to give Miss Korea a chance after reading your comment. ^_^

it’s set in 1997, during the IMF crisis… so it’s got a few history lessons

Yesss! History lessons! I will shamefacedly admit here that the only things I know about Korean history are things I learned from k-dramas (and the Wikipedia-inspired reading I did thereafter), so this makes me excited!

Uggggggggggh re: What's Up, Fox?. I was so excited about the premise, and I can see why people would enjoy the show if that premise was explored in an engaging and heartfelt way. I just...like you said, why did they have him rape her to create that shift? There are SO many other things they could have done to move the plot forward that didn't legitimize rape on television, ya know?

Re: The Woman Who Still Wants to Marry, I've seen this, and I loved it! Kim Bum and his beautiful smile! The friendships between the women! The run-in between the translator and the doctor on the plane while she is wearing a face mask! Soooo good :D

I am going to check out It's Okay, It's Love when my next marathon window opens up :) I like Gong Hyo Jin! If you get the chance here or on another open thread, I'd like to know more about the Okjayo brothers. Isn't the ending supposed to be terrible? Thanks! And yeah, thanks to this thread, got loads of great drama reccos!

Will find another thread to mention this to you as well, in case you don't see this... but there are a couple of interesting podcasts by Rana Mitter on K-Pop on BBC, that I came across a couple of weeks ago. I was hoping for something fun like DB podcasts and was a bit disappointed when he went all serious! But, it's actually quite interesting... and connects K-Pop with Korea's external relations as well as domestic history.

Anyhoo, see ya around!! :)

So, I have a few recommendations, but I'll explain a bit just in case.

Marriage Contract: for a strong heroine, you can't get any better than Hye-soo. UEE is doing a fantastic job of acting it, as well. I just... love this show. A lot. Hopefully not to anyone's death, though (ouch, too soon). My only caution is ep. 12, not rape-y but *spoiler alert?* he's drunk and he tries to kiss her. *end spoiler?*

Who Are You? Was good, strong female lead, some people don't like Taecyeon but I think he's adorable.

Queen In-hyun's Man is great, gotta love that writer. I'm still getting used to era clothing myself, but I didn't mind it in this one.

Signal is a fantastic ride, I love all the character and heart and just everything. Again, caution though--several cases center around rape, so just disclosing.

I'm definitely going to give Signal a try. I'll also check out Queen In-hyun's Man, especially since you say that the period clothing didn't bother you in this one.

Hee, I just looked up Taecyeon (I don't follow k-pop at all), and he is a cutie! A bit young, but *unf*, that hair! That face! :P

Yup. Everyone seems to love that show and praises it for the "realistic adult relationship" but this scene made me so angry, I just couldn't continue watching. I can't say I understand how people can overlook this scene.

I felt Kim Su-nah in Night after Night had a pretty strong character. I didn't watch the show until the end, but I liked how she isn't hung up about guys, but her priority is her job. I thought the show in some way felt quite Japanese – the focus is on the work the characters do, even if there is a romance.

Re: What's Up, Fox?, yeah, if there is anything good about that drama, I didn't get to see it, because I rage-quit the dram after that episode. There honestly wasn't even any "wiggle-room" of "well, they were both drunk, so...". He was stone-cold sober, and she was so drunk she couldn't stand on her own. Ugh, I'm getting angry just thinking about it.

One thing that I find kind of weird about noona-romances is that they always have a HUGE age-gap (like, 9+ years) between the leads. I'd love to see a noona-romance where the female lead is like....3-5 years older than the male lead. Is that too much to ask for? o_O

Song Jin-ah, the writer of healer generally writes not so bad female characters and relationships. Even in Faith, despite its many, many flaws, there was a lot of respect between the male and the female protagonist. They also grew in the relationship, talked about problems and learned something out of it. They overdid it a little bit in terms of the female protagonists problems to adjust to the new time period though. And there is a little problem, that the whole thing starts with a kidnapping, so one could possibly argue that there also is a bit of a stockholm syndrom involved...

Sungkyungkwan Scandal sounds like a good choice if you want to venture into saguek as it has plenty of romance, bromance and general eye-candy and it also features a strong, smart female protagonist (even though I wasn't wild about Park Min Young's acting in it). There are funny Joseon-era hats though. If you don't mind a longer time commitment, both Jumong and Queen Seondeok are tons of fun with dynamic heroines, and, because they're both set in the Three Kingdoms era, you get sexy manes of glory instead of gats which is always a plus.

Have you tried Empress Ki? Yes, it's long and it is a sageuk but it has a tough, smart female lead, more so than Queen Seongdeok, I think.

I agree with your assessments of Secret Garden and Arang & the Magistrate. I disliked the male lead's stalkerish behavior in SG. I DNF Arang and Cheese in the Trap for the reasons you stated. Another one that everyone seems to love is Master's Sun but I quickly tired of the way that the female lead kept screeching and running to the male lead. Even Healer (which, sorry, because I know that you liked it) featured a female lead who was too sweet and spunky for me. Because Korean rom coms tend towards kind, pretty heroines, I prefer dramas where romance is not the main focus. That way I'm less disappointed with the female lead. Thus I second another people's recommendation of Punch and Signal. I also enjoyed Cruel City, I Remember You, Faith, School 2013, Miss Granny, and Hot Young Bloods (but beware, one of the secondary characters might be a victim of rape). These dramas/movies may have their flaws but Wimpy Women is not one of them.

Man, Arang and the Magistrate and Cheese in the Trap were so disappointing. They each started out so strong, but by the end, the heroine in both was a shell of her former engaging and interesting self. Grrrr....

I'm definitely going to check out Signal, I Remember You and School 2013 (I've heard there's the bromance-to-end-all-bromances in this one). I'll have to look up a description of Miss Granny: that is a hilarious title!

Aloha, Andrea...

I know what you mean about the gats. It's the main reason I've put off watching SUNGKYUNGKWAN SCANDAL. I greatly enjoyed PAINTER OF THE WIND despite the danged hats, mainly because of the leading lady's performance and the murder mystery she helps unravel. Oh, and the music!

My first Kdrama was (pseudo) sageuk DR. JIN (Joseon Marcus Welby Meets MacGuyver), which got me intrigued with Korean costume dramas.

I tried out a few episodes of other shows on HULU here in the US, and got whiplash from DAMO... the wire work and the rock soundtrack was too much for me at that time. CHUNO changed my mind about the music -- MC Sniper's rap was a revelation, and I don't even like rap. Have since watched more fusion sageuks and they are growing on me.

I gave THE KING'S DAUGHTER, SU BAEK-HYANG a shot, and was hooked for all 108 episodes. Three romances in one, with great sword fighting, gorgeous sets, costumes and cinematography, and a terrific cast full of wonderful actors I've since come to recognize as I keep watching Kdramas. I cannot imagine anyone else playing any of the roles, even the minor ones. Yoon Tae-Young's portrayal of deaf-mute family man and former assassin Koo-Chun was deeply affecting. His ability to emote and communicate non-verbally stole the show... along with his swordfighting.

Seol-Nan as portrayed by Seo Hyun-Jin is a chip off the old block, future King Muryeong, who has ruined me as far as Kdrama rulers are concerned. (Fangirl Aside: Lee Jae-Ryong should perform in more sageuks! Ditto for Jo Hyun-Jae, Jeon Tae-Soo, and Kim Young-Jae, the paranoid king of Gaya.) Her love of family, friends, and brothers-in-arms is deep and tenacious, as is her capacity to stick to her guns. She survives spy training that washes out many men as part of her quest to find her missing sister... and in the process truly become the Protector of Baekje.

I found the SBH thread at Soompi in an attempt to understand more than was revealed in the subtitles... such as forms of address, cultural background, Kdrama conventions, etc. Eventually caught up with the episodes as they aired, and started participating online. In the process I met wonderful fellow fans for insightful discussions and hilarity -- and communal hair-tearing during the Sochi Olympics, which pre-empted SBH. It was exhilarating and exhausting... and got me totally hooked on Kdramas.

Sorry for a long post... but SBH will always hold a special place in my heart, and not merely because of all those hunky warriors fighting with swords. ;-)

Enjoy! -- PakalanaPikake

Wow, you make a really compelling case for The King's Daugther, Su Baek-hyang. I think a 108-episode sageuk is a bit too much to commit to at this point in my drama-watching career, but if I find that I do, in fact, enjoy sageuks, I will definitely check this one out.

Your experience in the Soompi forums sounds awesome! I love it when one is able to form friendships through a shared internet space. :)

Yer darn tootin', Sis!

My way of dodging that bullet is to tune in to the Three Kingdoms and other pre-Joseon eras, or stories set among the lower rungs of society, where ponytails abound (CHUNO being a tonsorially scrumptious case in point). Hehehe...

Having come of age during the Shaggy Seventies, I appreciate glorious rock-star tresses, and still wear my hair shoulder-length. I never learned how to plait my naturally curly/frizzy hair, so traditional women's braids are out -- but aren't all that appealing anyway.

A while back, I hit upon a DIY solution to the Manes Of Glory Deficit after noticing the similarity between the hairstyles of Kwan Yin, Avalokitesvara, and ancient Korean dudes. Instead of a topknot, I wear a ponytail at my crown chakra, with the rest of the hair down in the back. If I let it air-dry that way, I get cascades of ringlets -- my patented Wash 'n' Wear Dreadlocks. I admit I'm kind of nuts, but it keeps my hair out of my eyes, and also allows me to channel my Celtic and viking badass warrior ancestors. ;-)

As for SU BAEK-HYANG, 108 episodes sounds like a lot -- although it was supposed to be 120. (Thanks, Sochi Olympics. Not.) The episodes are less than half an hour.

The story and its characters have so much heart that after a while, I even started watching it before the subtitles came out. Yeah, it was that compelling. One of the Soompie crew recapped every episode -- truly a labor of love -- and that helped a lot with understanding the action.

/rant on

There's something about the sounds of the Korean language that I really like listening to. Perhaps it's something to do with that courtly ancient analogue of Shakespearean English... Or the diction, which sounds very precise to my ear. One of the things I absolutely detest about contemporary American TV is the flannel-mouth mumbling of so many actors. Even after hitting rewind repeatedly, I sometimes still cannot understand what they're saying. Phooey!

/rant off

I enjoyed MBC America's subtitles.

The OST is simply gorgeous, and includes an ancient folk song set to modern music -- Lady Chaewa sings it to the Field Marshall, and both her daughters learn it. The Baekche royal family's Dance of Grace alone is worth the price of admission. Ditto for Seol-Nan's singing and dancing among the drying laundry during her spy mission in Gaya. The song she sings is so haunting...

There's plenty of humor to offset the tragic turns of events. Pay careful attention to Prince MyonNong's bodyguard, Kang-Bok / Yeo Ui-Joo, as well as Seol-Nan's secret service buddies (Ddol-Dae / Kim Roe-Ha and Mang-Koo / Kim Min-Kyo). The bromance is such fun to watch.

Anyway, you might consider watching the first...

Anyway, you might consider watching the first couple of episodes to see if the story grabs you the way it instantly drew me in to SBH's parents' backstories.

Perhaps this classic will persuade you:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9qdfMYFl0Ic

Omo, I feel like a sageuk pusher!

Hmmm... Just recalled that there is one scene in which Jin-Mu turns into a cad and a bounder and gets extremely fresh with Seol-Hee the usurper -- in the ancestral shrine, no less -- that you'll want to skip. I tried to identify the episode, but no dice.

Also, back home in Kimun, when the sisters encounter a pair of loser robbers in the woods, the ruffians back off pronto when they learn that Daddy is Kuchon the Silent, for whom they have a healthy professional respect.

---

Yes, the international camaraderie over on the SBH thread at Soompie made for a wonderful viewing experience. Reminded me of a certain FidoNet BBS that I used to hang out at in the early 90s where the conversations had a similarly high signal-to-noise ratio... like here on DB. ;-)

Alas, the nested comments there are now in disarray and the threads are mangled. Makes them hard to read. Sad. There are some great writers over there.

Anyway... Glad to meet you, Andrea! I haven't posted much here at DB... yet. But I'm game to meet like-hearted Kdrama lovers.

BTW, I've lived most of my life in New Jersey, USA, with a couple of years in Hawaii. Where are you from?

Aloha,
PakalanaPikake

PS -- If DAMO appeals to you, check out the film DUELIST, which was brought to my attention by DB's own Thunderbolt. (Yay, Thundie!) Ha Ji-Won again plays a two-fisted damo, Namsoon. Her sword-tangos with Sad Eyes / Gang Dong-Won are gorgeous. Gat Alert... but Sad Eyes wears his hair down at times.

Coincidence Alert: Ha Ji-Won's kid brother, Jeon Tae-Su, plays Prince Jin-mu in SBH.

Hi Beanies,
It's a windy day (60-100mph) today, so I think it will be a good day to marathon something. After reading your comments, I think I will go with Marriage Contract. I need something old fashioned good.

Of course, I won't be able to get to the marathon until I finish up my DoTs work. I don't really understand the purpose of the recaps, unless they are just including scenes with product promotion (which they aren't). I am looking forward to the BTS today. I am sad to have learned that the Song-Song couple is just on screen. The actors are "just good friends."

Watching:

Five Children: Love this show. Even though I have to force myself to watch the annoying characters, like the ex-dancer and the director (such liars) and the teacher and the sister-in-law (well, two idiots in love), I am looking forward to when their story arcs mature and they are redeemed. I think we saw some foreshadowing this past week with the mother-in-law suggesting they buy a building for son-in-law. I think many of the families will end up living in said building together, but in their own apartments. I know a lot of people here don't like to watch the 50 episode dramas, but I like them because there is so much time to develop the characters.

Ms. Temper: Another good one. Low ratings and it takes forever for the English subs, but interesting stories/conflicts and well acted. I'm still trying to figure out what makes Ms. Temper tick. Why is she so ornery? What did husband #3 do? With her personality, how is it that these guys actually married her? Were they expecting a woman who was sweet? It's not like she puts out any aeygoo. And personally, I like husband #1. He seems to have grown a lot since they split up. But she can't forgive him.

Okay, enough of that. That's all I'm watching. I'm up to my ears with basketball playoffs which cuts into my K-drama time.

Why is it unfortunate? If there was only one good team, the games would be soooooo boring. I love it when two great teams play each other. When the opponent works out a great play, I cheer for that (well, inwardly or say, "Oooh, good play.") and then watch to see how Draymond adjusts to prevent it the next time. I guess that comes from having years of a weak or mediocre team. I learned to watch how the plays develop and not pay so much attention to the score.

Well, we're rivals after all ;)

ktiep, i adore five children! the leads are cute together, trying to navigate their way to love:) him mentioning her name during dinner was fun! cue, reactionary shots from everyone, hahahahhaa... rooting for the golfer & the teacher also!

i've grown to luv watching weekend dramas, for the extended arcs and multiple story-lines. some are even good especially if they deal w/ redeeming a character over an extended period of time, not just the quick-fix, ok-everything-is-good-now, the end...

I like Ms. Temper, I like Woo Ju and at this point I even like the formerly-useless brother. But everyone else is seriously getting on my nerves. It's episode 11 by now and they are all still as idiotic as can be. Why did every Lovely employee just accept the bribe? I suppose the drama is exaggerating but it's getting to be frustrating in the drama. Does no one have a moral code? Are they all so desperate for money? Is it all so normal for a person in Korea to just take a wad of money when it's offered to you? Does no one have a brain (since they don't even seem to be thinking anymore whether something is good for their company or not)? The company boss is the worst, every time someone flashes a note at him his brain is out of the door. It's beyond me how he could ever lead a company and I'm afraid even if Lovely Cosmetics survives, I won't be able to buy that the company boss actually changes his ways.

As for the ex-husbands: getting tired of them too. It's one thing they once were with Ms. Temper, but a whole other that they ALL come back and ALL want her back despite the fact that it's 100% obvious that they haven't changed and are still doing the things that Ms. Temper hates and divorced them for. Why would they think she'd now find them appealing? Or are they thinking she must have changed and would now find their scheming, manipulative ways attractive? It just doesn't make sense.

I love Ms. Temper, but I really wish the story around her wasn't quite so extreme and exaggerated, that there were nuances, more greys. Eleven episodes in and except for the formerly-useless brother there seems to have been little growth in characters (or if they had any growth, they somehow reverted back to their old, idiotic ways, just that the company has more success now).

Happy Friday! I am kind of tired of hearing about DoTS, then again I am always happy to read about some side character actor getting recognition. Ji Seong-hyun who played North korean soldier had a short interview [OSEN/koreadaily]. He actually appeared in many dramas we are familiar with. Starting in 2007, he appeared in Queen Sun-duk, High kick, Il Jimae, Strongest Seven, I am sam, Golden bride, Hit, Queen Insoo, Reply 1994, Age of Feeling, Joseun Gunman, Maids, Preserve Goo Ha-ra, Mrs. Cops and DoTS (and many more). Shame on me- I don't remember him from these dramas :(
This is first time he received such interests. Some even mentioned that he looks like a North Korean solder. He even had the complements that he is the hero who made the drama's happy ending (by saving male leads).

Q: How do you feel about you being part of the DoTS?
A: Firstly, I think I am honored joining the drama which reached the national and international level. And I am thankful having an interview like this.
Q: How do you feel about getting all this recognition?
A: I am really grateful and I realized the amazing power of a drama again. I wondered if people would remember me, but they remembered me appearing in earlier episode, and I was cursed until the episode 13 was finished. However I was amazed watching response changed after episode 14. Actually I got noticed for a short while when I was cast for 'Friend 2' and did cameo in 'Reply', but I was amazed when my name popped up in the on-line research word after the DoTS broadcast, almost felt scary. This is the drama viewed in many countries and had good ratings, so I was grateful reading favorable comments about my acting.

Q: Your North Korean soldier acting was natural. Have you ever played North Korean solider before?
A: I practiced saturi/accent of North Korean soldier, and I played one when I did 'Age of feeling'. I was thankful for the comment "I thought you were really North Korean Soldier". There was even the comment "You look like a North Korean Soldier". I am just thankful.
Q: Is there any area you paid special attention for your acting?
A: I practiced a lot not to feel awkward when speaking with the North Korean accent. I practiced the accent, used deep voice in expressing the character, and practiced vocalization to sound as breaking (like drip-drip).

Q: Did you think this drama would be phenomenal when you were filming?
A: Personally I thought this drama would be more than mediocre. It seemed that production team worried a lot before starting production, but when we had the party after shooting completed, PD-nim, writer-nim all had confidence and had high expectations. Atmosphere is that everyone was shocked because show did better than expected.
Q: How did you join the drama?
A: I joined a little late. It was when only part of scripts were out, and I thought I might appear later for a short time. I had an interview with PD-nim and he asked me to do it right away.
Q: Was there any behind scene story on action scenes?
A: I hurt my shoulder and had shot and stuff. During the first filming, I got hit on my face wrong way, so filming was stopped- things like that. You are more than likely getting hurt while shooting action scenes I think. Since real knife was used, it was dangerous also. Action parts were edited out somewhat- it was not short opening. It came out well making up for difficulty we had.

Q: How was acting with Song Joong-gi and Jin Gu?
A: I did action scenes with Joong-gi ssi. Because we've spent 4-5 hours together for a month, we became close. He leads the site well and takes care of staffs well.. As the lead, he led well. As for Jin Gu, he has image of being warm, like DaenjangGuk (Bean soup). He is sunbae type who lights up the shooting atmosphere to be cheerful.
Q: The last scene you saved Song Joong-gi and Jin Gu was impressive.
A: It was a short scene, but I guess Kim Eun-sook writer-nim must've felt that we filmed crudely after she viewed the ending scene and little disappointed. She said to at least add the inner voice, and cooked up the narration. We did dubbing again.

He is married with two daughters. He had the doubts if he should give up being an actor because of hard life being a no-name actor.
Q: You were born in 1981. You are not young, so do you feel anxiety?
A: When I was younger, I felt lots of exasperation, and conflicted. Movies or dramas that I prepared never saw the light because of lack of recognition.. That was when my wife was pregnant with second child, but I endured well. I had such difficulty that I discussed with my wife if I should open a Ddukbokgi (spicy rice cake) place instead, but she said "I hope oppa does what oppa likes to do." so I changed my mind.
I still have to have auditions just like before. I am thankful because I got so much love now, but I think this just increased a chance for getting more meetings/auditions.
Q: Your wife must be happy about you being in DoTS?
A: She has know-how by now. She tries not to be bothered. She knows popularity is just a bubble. She watched the drama and just said "You did good" indifferently. She does not show, but I think she likes it. When I go for an interview, she arranges the poses I should take and sends me. I wonder if that came out good today.

Q: Is there any role or project you want to do?
A: Playing the character in DoTS, I digested this character imagining I have a girlfriend in North Korea. Actually I am a soft guy, so I'd like to do a romance. haha. I'd like to do wide range of roles. My goal is to be shown as the character in the project. I hope there are more opportunities for me, and would like to greet the viewers with more various roles.
Q: How are you going to do pursuing your acting?
A: I have been having meetings to do dramas. Because with a movie, even though casting is going on, you never know when they will open.. Currently I am just doing interviews hard.
Q: What kind of actor you are dreaming of being?
A: That is the question I always ask myself. I think this when I am not so busy with work "Why I want to be an actor?" But thinking about it, first it is fun and I am so happy when I am on the shooting site. I am acting for the sake of me. Basically I want to be an actor who can act well, and be recognized as the character I play by playing the role well, rather than being known as Ji Seong-hyun.

Fighting for all struggling actors/actresses!

Hi all:

Such sad news about Prince. I always liked His Purple Highness. Bad week on the whole. Sick child. So hard to figure out what it is when a child is non-verbal. So I'm just worrying myself silly and pondering taking him to the hospital.

Dramas:

Entertainer: Good so far

Contract Marriage: I thought episode 14 was the perfect ending and then...discovered it wasn't the ending. Ah me! I hate when angst is drawn out. Fearing repetition; fearing heroine's noble idiocy. There is just so much intrusive parental guilt-triping and manipulation I can take.

Ms Temper: I'm actually buying the romance. I thought it'd be wedged in and unbelievable but wow! I could see how love would develop and I would want these two together. Now I'm rooting for the love affair. I'm hoping his former wife doesn't reappear. Life was so good when I thought our hero was a widower but nooooooooooooo they had to say he was divorced. So where is his ex-wife?

Daebak: Okay. I'm fairly indifferent to hero's plight, although I do hate the villain. The story isn't calling me to watch it. Not sure why. But there are so many things in the script that bothers me ...for so many reasons...that I feel very far removed from the whole situation.

Awaiting the new dramas.

Have a good weekend, all.

Carol,
I’m hoping his former wife doesn’t reappear. Life was so good when I thought our hero was a widower but nooooooooooooo they had to say he was divorced. So where is his ex-wife? She's "overseas" and while there met another man, so she abandoned her husband and child. (I'm making this up. I don't know the back story.) I hope whe doesn't show up ala The President is Dating and ruin the whole budding romance. But then, the show is worth watching without any romance.

I hope your child is feeling better soon.

My kid is sick too and tho he is 2.5 years old he is slow to talk and therefore non-verbal (in adult understood language!), which is frustrating and worrying. And I'm medical (I deal with adults tho) but I worry like mad also, maybe even more. I was just whatsapp-ing my peadiatrician friend to bombard her and ask for advice so I don't have to drag the kid to hospital while on holiday!
So I feel your pain and sleepless nights and worry. Hug!
Hope the kid gets well soon! ❤️

Hi Michykdrama -
I hope you don't mind this recommendation, but you might check out the first season of Signing Time by Rachel Coleman (only the first season though because afterwards, they don't vary the songs as much).

I am a long-time teacher and this series teaches American a Sign Language. It enhances children's' ability to speak. It has also had tremendous success helping students with different learning disabilities or impairments increase in cognitive ability. Truly amazing. At the very least, it is fun and entertaining. The benefits are noteworthy, and all children seem to learn from it because it combines kinesthetic learning with music (auditory) and visuals. ?

Even if they're in present pain, there's all this begging and pleading and cajoling to do to get the kid to trust that you're making him better. Thank God for doctors who specialize in treating these kinds of folks cause wow! much patience is required.

Try Yoona's Street.

It's different. Wonderful cast. The OTP is a Straight Arrow all around good guy , ( Lee Hee Joon ), a female pickpocket, (Kim Ok-Vin ).

Lively mix of thieves, gangsters and our Mr. Goody 2 Shoes.

Lee Moon Sik is hillarious as a small time gangster that owns a dance club and a small apartment building, where our pickpocket lives.

Still can't move on from Signal while currently having separation anxiety for SFD which leads me to refuse watching the last 5 eps. I don't even have the will to pick up another ongoing drama lol.

Been eyeing Ms. Temper and Goodbye Mr. Black, are they really good? I have been skeptical for Jinwook's drama selection altho i swore to follow his work after Nine.

Really anticipate many upcoming dramas; Police 38, Jealousy Incarnate, Dear My Friend. The news is tempting, why time doesn't get faster?

On another kdrama unrelated, Game of Throne is coming back this weekend!!!! Who's excited because i totally am ?

Oh just finished the latest podcast after listening the first time for 30 minutes and put it down for days. Why no SFD ? Really wish you guys will make SFD podcast too, hopefully with Heads?

Happy Friday! Can't believe april is almost over....
Haven't watched any kdramas lately, was too hooked on signal and it was so good.

But have been watching some of the new doramas just to get a first impression.
Love Song with Fukuyama Masaharu and newcomer actress Fujiwara Sakura (talented singer and songwriter) I like it. It's interesting to have a heroine like Sakura who stutters which makes even the simplest conversation incredible hard for her. I'm just hoping there wont be any romance between them as Fukuyama is almost 50 and Sakura is 20!

Sekai Ichi Muzukashii Koi, well I like the cast but I can't say I'm hooked. I'll continue to watch for now as I think Ohno is a funny actor and I like that his romantic interest is portrayed by Haru.

On other news, Hikki (Utada Hikaru) has finally come back from her hiatus. I love both songs from her. She's started to look and sound a lot more like her mother.

Love Song was a little slow in the first few minutes, but by the end of episode 1.... wow, I was in pieces. This is a very, very promising drama.

Absolutely hope there's no love line between Fukuyama and Sakura!!! I think there's a chance they are actually father & daughter. And that she might get a romance with Suda Masaki's character, despite the fact that he is currently crushing/heartbroken over the 'sister'. (So happy that Suda is in this too.)

Didn't try Sekai Ichi Muzukashii Koi, Ohno just doesn't do it for me as an actor and I think he picks pretty weird projects (I didn't even get far with the dorama he did with Kamiki Ryunosuke, who I always watch... may try again, and watch only Kamiki's scenes!)

I'd rather hope they were father and daughter, but would it mean he had a relationship with Haruno? I get a feeling there was more to them then just bandmates.
Suda Masaki is adorkable, I loved that he headbutted Kouhei!
Also it's clear that Natsuki has feelings for Kouhei but he seems at the moment like such a manchild.

Waiting to see boku no yabai tsuma which I've heard is intriguing and I wish someone would sun Naomi to Kanako even though it's from last season.

Wow, Love Song was a pleasant surprise.

Fujiwara Sakura has a new fan, me! I didn't realize Fukuyama Masaharu was an accomplished singer, I had only seen him act in Ryōmaden.

I have to say if someone wants to watch a drama where music plays a big role, Love Song should do it.

Hi everyone! I was wondering if you guys could answer a question for me. After watching kdramas for so long I finally got around to watching my favorite actors and actresses in interviews. Forgive me for saying this but tmI found them all to be very bland... And the funny thing is that I could see it was intentional. I understand and admire that Korean culture stresses politeness but they look like they're on job interviews? What's with that?

I am American though. I bet other countries look at our celebrities and think we are simply out if control. And in a lot of cases, that is quite true!

0

Required fields are marked *

I totally agree with you, and I'm an Asian. Koreans are especially concerned about being polite, I realized. Most Korean celebrities are politically correct to the extent that it's boring to watch their interviews, because they don't reveal much about themselves, or the show that they're supposed to promote. Sometimes you hear more sorrys than actual content. But there are some exceptions, like Yoo Ah In. I realized he's one of the few Korean actors who are very candid in interviews and I like it.

Required fields are marked *

I think what you are noticing with K-drama celebrity interviews etc is a basic difference between high context and low context societies/cultures. S Korea is a very high context society and countries like US, Canada, Australia etc are very low context societies. In S Korea, until recently a homogeneous society, every one is assumed to have the same "context" as other Koreans and complex ideas, concepts etc can be expressed in few words. Cultures like this are most often very hierarchical as well with people being separated by age, rank, class and so on. Often this hierarchies can come into conflict like when an older person is of a lower social class. So, when entertainers are appearing on a television interview show, they are not just being interviewed, they are presenting themselves as a Korean with to other Koreans with the same cultural expectations of politeness, correctness etc so it might seem dull to outsiders.

Contrast this with my Canadian culture which is very multi-cultural and not homogeneous at all. Canada is a prime example of a low context society. Because so many different cultures exist here, almost all information and communication has to be done through words, not through a shared cultural context. It's not important at all to place people according to their age, rank, social class so people have more freedom to be themselves rather than to place themselves in a cultural context. There are pluses and minuses to both systems.

So, finally completed Six flying dragon (& I hav found my new crush - YAI):

1. I can see drama is trying to land a good image for our hero.. but … I really can’t shake my doubts about him –

He is a tyrant..impatient, will do what he wants..and immediately ‘remove elements’ that irks him or his beliefs in any way..the only good thing.. he is a tyrant with a cause..
Selfish and wants power..

Coming to the first king and sambong – i just think all of this is so stupid..
As per sambong’s grand plan – king is supposed to be a puppet with family having no power..

SO why did they want regime change? as po eun said.. keep the same goreyo king..and make the changes you want to.. that would have been easily done…

What is the point in pulling some of the most acclaimed fighters of the land and push them into powerless irrelevant positions in the country?

And eventually that is what happened..another dynasty..

Every dynasty will have good leaders and really bad leaders, storng leaders and weak leaders..

Silla dynasty spanned 1K yrs, goreyo 500, josheon 500…
So should we say Silla was better? Or Capitalism may prove to be the best bet ever (I wonder..world is in dumps rt now)

Hey there Beanies- I was wondering if you guys could help me remember this K-drama I watched before. I remember it was a sageuk (I hope I'm spelling that right), released in the last 5 years or so.

There's this scene stuck in my head where the hero guy is badly injured and in risk of bleeding out. The scene takes place in a cave where hero gal treats his wounds with, of all things, spider webs from the walls of the cave (she uses the webs as if they were sticky band aids, layering them atop one another).

I may/ may not be misremembering, but I believe hero guy was the king/emperor and was being chased. Then he got gravely injured and maybe fell in a stream and drifted to the cave? I feel like there was a stream in there. I dunno.

Anywho, it's been on my mind this week and I was wondering if any of you had some ideas. Happy Friday, everybody! ^_^

I also remember this scene but I can't place it. I looked back at Empress Ki after they jumped off a cliff into a river and then got better hiding in a cave, but there were no spiderwebs in that scene. I hope I can figure it out this weekend :)

Thank you!

I, too have watched Empress Ki. The cave scene in that one was hmm... fun, heh.

Arang and the Magistrate had a cave scene, too. But not like the one I'm thinking of. ^_^'
I'm grateful that you remember the scene I'm talking about. I tried to use the almighty googlle-fu to find it but no dice. :/

It sounds like the scene in the Chinese drama, Imperial Doctress. I know you said it was Korean, but I thought I would throw this out there.

Thank you for the suggestion! Although I'm fairly certain it was a Korean drama as I have only really watched those up till now. But I may give it a look to see if it tickles my fancy. ;)

Seriously, though, if you remember what it is it will end this oh so overly dramatic torment! My little gray cells have failed me in this intrepid endeavor. ;_;

Aloha, Jazzy...

You have me scratching my head, too, because I know I saw spiderwebs used to stanch bleeding. Based on the cave and stream description, the only sageuk I've watched so far that could be it is KINGDOM OF THE WINDS, set in ancient Goguryeo.

PSA: KotW is 100% gat-free, so there's lots of long hair flying. ;-)

Much of the hero's early life is spent painting murals in the cave where dynasty founder Jumong's tomb is hidden. A river does run through it.

The heroine was an herbalist/physician, so she would have used spider webs.

I watched it about 6-7 months ago, so am hazy on the details...

A second possibility comes to mind: In THE RETURN OF IL JI-MAE / MOON RIVER, the hero gets patched up in a cave (or was it a temple, and then hid out in a cave??) by his herbalist girlfriend. I just watched it a week or two ago, but don't recall spider webs...

Hope this helps. ;-)

Thank you for your reply.

But alas, I have watched neither of those. I don't think painting was part of the story.

My vague memory tells me that this was some secret identity do-gooder who just happened to be a man of power (King/Emperor/Nobleman, I can't recall exactly). He was injured while being pursued and ends up in the cave, heavily bleeding and unconscious by the time hero lady gets to him. She looks around the cave frantically for something to help bind his wounds and makes a beeline for the cobwebs.

I'm a real sucker for those vigilante robin-hood types and their darker brethren, so it would make sense if that was part of the story.

But I can't really remember much other than that. Faces. Names. Key characters or other plot points are lost on me. :/

(Your other comments about King's daughter has my interest piqued ;) )

Aloha, Jazzy...

Curiouser and curiouser.

I came across another possibility in my Kdrama log:

THE KING'S FACE (2014-15, KBS2) 23 eps.

Prince Gwanghae's father, King Seonjo, has benighted facial feng shui -- and really could have used a house call from Great Doctor Eun-Soo. So sonny boy, who's got auspicious facial structure even though his mom was only a concubine, studies physiognomy with the help of an avuncular eunuch, reminiscent of Captain Picard, so he can figure out dear old dad. His childhood friend and first love is a tomboy who is later orphaned. Eventually he becomes Crown Prince, but gets no respect for 16 years even as he's saving the nation's bacon.

Elsewhere, an idealistic rebel leader becomes a master physiognomist, and plots to overthrow the system. Tomboy becomes orphaned, is adopted by rebel leader, and becomes a skilled warrior herself. They end up hiding out in the mountains. Before the idealist turns into a flaming maniac.

The Japanese are invading, and Gwanghae spends a lot of time incognito while rallying the troops and dodging court intrigue. For the life of me, I cannot recall if he ends up in a cave getting patched up, but it wouldn't surprise me. This is what I get for marathoning 23 episodes. Grrr. Sorry about that, chief.

Aside: There's passing mention of Admiral Yi Sun-Shin, which prompted me to next watch RAGING CURRENTS, which was terrific. I'd heard about the turtle ships that antedated the American Civil War ironclad battleships USS Monitor and USS Virginia. Great film!!! As is WAR OF THE ARROWS.

Now I'm really wondering what you watched. Maybe JB will include your query in a future installment of Drama Scene Investigation: Kdramaland.

Happy Friday once again!

Fantastic Duo – it’s a combination of Masked Singer and Immortal Songs II with a twist that includes non-celeb participants. What an amazing line up of singers so far that spans generations, but who in the world thought up the complicated tryout and elimination process? Fantastic Duo borrows from Masked Singer in running over into the next episode that leaves viewers wanting more.

Jackpot – was Da Gil’s father really that great of a gambler? Did anyone catch the mention that the father’s body wasn’t found, which makes me think he’ll show up again? JGS is so perfect on screen that I can hardly see anything else going on, but with the introduction of the two “tigers” he has to beat, the story is getting interesting (even with the number of people one has to keep track of and a couple of major tangent story lines).

Vampire Detective – Although ep 4 has its own mystery to solve, the thread of the original story returns with a vampire femme fatal who knows more about everyone’s lives and begins to reveal that making everyone on edge, but to what end? Now we wonder what the original mission was when San got shot by his partner who may now be living out a new identity, but what has that got to do with San and why was he derailed and shot?

Happy Together seems to have found a rhythm after a rocky and risky departure from the sauna set and firing Misun (who I sorely miss). Uhm Hyun-kyung, the new regular cast member, is holding her own which is no small feat with the rest of the crew. I give her a lot of credit. Jaeseok, as always, is the host with the most – he can make the most awkward situations turn around.

After ep 1, I'm going to give Entertainer a chance. It's so easy to picture Ji Sung as Yoona (*giggle*)

Have a good weekend! \/owl

I think Fantastic Duo/FD is like Duet Song Festival/DSF,
in FD the celebrity can't picked the 3 non-celebrity singer while in DSF the celebrity saw all the footage and casted the person they want to be their partner on final stage.

I think both is entertaining , FD has app that is so cute , fun and people sing the same song while DSF has this bond when they preparing for the stage.
FD is more solo artist related cause they have to upload the karaoke version while in DSF there's mostly idol and has many rap collaboration.

There's new singing show called God's voice too, I haven't check that but it also looked good. The non celebrity will sing with covering their face and the winner will face the celebrity in final stage, they got money if they can win, the prize multiplied for the next ep.

I don't think it's gonna be sub since the singer is all veteran, not every channel is as generous as KBS World in youtube and Idk if fans or VIU app can picked it up too.

I watched some show in raw like I can see your voice season 2, these day JTBC in youtube put CC button that make fans can contribute to subbing some of the clip. ^^

Hi all!

It's been a while since I have regularly posted here. I took a few months hiatus from watching Kdramas but I think I am ready to get back into the swing of things. Marathoned "Signal" in one shot. lol You just can't walk away from that drama. I tried watching "Come Back Ahjussi" but the story got away from me midway so I lost interest. Might pick it back up later. I am really looking for another finished drama to marathon. Any suggestions?

Have a nice weekend!

Aigoooo ~

Are C dramas ok? If so, for a fantasy, Wu Xin: The Monster Killer is a good show.

Elvis Han and Gina Jin make for a wonderful OTP as they battle monsters. Wang Yan Lin as their sidekick, Chen Yao as one of the more interesting villainesses I've seen.

20 episodes.

I'm finding it difficult to engage in dramas right now. I am watching Ms. Temper (it's engaging now that the handling of the show has stabilized) but otherwise there's this bit of apathy towards picking up other dramas. And I know some of them could be/probably are worth the watch! I keep telling myself to wait until a certain show is about halfway through its run to spare myself some of the pain of getting hooked, but even then, once the show is halfway, I still cannot bring myself to watch the first episode. Is anyone else or has anyone else experienced this reluctance? I suppose it's not my first time being distracted from drama watching but never has it happened for this long of a period. I'm wondering if this is a sign that I need to step back, maybe take a break from Korean dramas. Yet how depressing does that sound?!

I've been having a tough time with the dramas this season (and last season) as well.

First, because the stories can be very repetitive. The same tropes over and over. In this case, Lawyer with Alzheimer, murderous chaebol heir, corporation trying to take over a small store, prosecutors who are owned by rich evil guys who seem to have countless minions at the ready. Which leads to....

Secondly, the relentless evil one sees in these shows just makes one depressed. One or two stories a season about an oppressed lead is endurable, but when there is this onslaught of injustice it really does wear down a person. Even if it's "only fiction." I want to say to the writers that there are tons of original stories out there; why are they copying/plaigiarizing-then-changing each other's scripts? And there are ways to create conflict without going down the "injustice is everpresent" road.

Other than that, there is the third and final problem: the overplotting and the underwriting. Watching Daebak, for instance, I keep thinking that the writer spent more time figuring out clever gambling tricks than figuring out a clever tricks. The coincidences, strange conversations that are supposed to be intense and confrontational which fall flat, time-wasting, stupid character choices, lucky breaks, etc.... it's all too much for me to get emotionally-involved in.

You are not alone. My exact same feeling regarding K-dramas lately! But mine maybe due to the fact that I went into overdose mode during the past four years when I watched my first K-drama, Pasta. I am now in rewatch mode. I tried watching J-drama and T-dramas and some I have enjoyed, but they are just not the same as my favorite K-drama. I am so glad to have found Dramabeans as it has been my source of finding enjoyable dramas. Thank you DB and Beanies!

"I’m finding it difficult to engage in dramas right now"
- me too

It's been several weeks and all I watch is T-Drama or C-drama, I watched Kdrama like Marriage Contract and Ms Temper but it doesn't feel the same, they still good and I watched it in real live aired bc if I watched after, I probably skipped lots of scene.
I still enjoy watching drama but Kdrama seem to didn't work on me anymore. Watching another Drama outside SK can make exited for some occasion but most of the time, I just feel it's okay if I don't watch the continuation.
It's like a redundant feeling over and over again.
One time I had myself complaining for almost 30 minutes bc I just don't get it, then I knew I have to restrain myself.

I think take a break is a good idea but trying another genre also can help.
I hope you can find the crack again ^^

Alas, i belong as well to kdrama hiatus. I've been traveling but now that i'm back on home base, i can't get into starting or watching. I thought a marathon on highly recommended ones, like SFD and/or Signal, will start me off. Nah. Instead i tried reading and came across a highly feted Korean writer. Luckily the library has her books. So, I finished two books on overnite each. Book titles are: Please Take Care of Mom (could have inspired that movie and drama of ajumma getting lost and time traveling back to her 20s) and I'll Be Right There. The last book i think was shortlisted for Booker Prize. Reading a Korean fiction writer is a first for me. I don't know how to describe feelings well nor do reviews. Words that come to mind- delicate, different, heartfelt, sophisticated... Anyone can recommend more book titles by translated (English) Korean authors?

Please Take Care of Mom is great (I reviewed it on my mostly-film-blog though I'm pretty lazy about reviewing books). I also found Princess Bari (Shin Kyung-sook) very compelling – not an easy read though. Another one: Kim Young-ha's Your Republic Is Calling You , which is quite good.

I've now got Kang Han's The Vegetarian on my to-read list, it has just been short-listed for the Man Booker Prize. It's been translated by Deborah Smith, who also translated Kang's Human Acts (also on my to-read list). You can probably keep your eye on Deborah Smith, pretty sure she'll be translating more Korean literature.

Websites: Check the books section the London Korean Links website (phttp://londonkoreanlinks.net/), Philip covers the ones published in English pretty thoroughly. And Charles Montgomery's KLit website (http://www.ktlit.com) promotes Korean Literature in Translation.

I've watched a lot of Film this week-end

* Crucible/The Silenced - I cried. I think I like trial scenes. Gong Yoo is really good here.

* The Piper (Son-nim) - It's good. I got freaked out on that scene with Chun Woo Hee.

* An Ethics Lesson - I LOVE Cho Jin Woong and Lee Je Hoon together!

* Mother - I think Won Bin really killed the girl.

* Moss - I love it! YOO Jun Sag and Park Hae Il's bromance is gold!

* Cold Eyes - I've watched it for the thrill, I got a little.

* Antique Bakery - Joo Ji Hoon is one great actor. With all his shows I've watched so far, I like him best here.

* Our Sun-Hee - Sun Hee is flighty isn't she?

* Just Friends? - Lee Je Hoon as gay is so cute! I think this is the first time I've seen him kiss, and he looks like a good kisser. Haha. On a more serious note, I love how the couple is not keeping their relationship a secret, just to their mothers, but they are really in love with each other.

* Sympathy for Lady Vengeance - Lee Young Ae is very beautiful. It's a little funny at times, but I guess, that's how the director wanted it to be. Of Park Chan Wook's revenge trilogy, I've only watched this and Old Boy, thus far. I enjoyed Old Boy very much, but this is a little boring and predictable compared to Old Boy.

Re: Crucible/The Silenced

Pearl, you might want to check this out:

[Re-upload] People Inside - Interview with Gong Yoo (English Subbed)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-GiPIBHuYsA

With warmest thanks to Rosemary and her anonymous sister for the English subtitles.

About a month ago, I stumbled across an excellent 2011 interview with Gong Yoo after he made the film DOGANI / SILENCED, adapted from a novel based on a true case of institutionalized child abuse at a school for the deaf. It sounds a lot like the sex abuse scandals at Greystone Park state mental hospital here in New Jersey. [Aside to fans of HOUSE: An episode was filmed at the late-Victorian asylum before it was demolished last year.]

His supervisor during his military service gave him a copy, and he was so affected by reading it that he researched it – and found out that it was based on a horrible true case. He discussed the possibility of making a film with a producer during his enlistment, and after his return to civilian life, DOGANI / SILENCED rocked the nation. He himself was only able to watch the film once, when it was screened for critics, because it shook him up so much even four months after filming it. He noted that the cast and crew were greatly concerned for the well-being of the child actors. He wryly said that although the senior actors and directors, etc., were concerned about possible future fallout in the childrens' lives, the kids blew it off and said it was just acting.

One day I will work up to watching DOGANI / SILENCED -- but first I'll have to be in a very good place.

GY's comments on the burden of sensitivity necessary for him to be an actor, what sounded like perfectionism (it takes one to know one), and the frustrations of living in a fishbowl, were very touching. He even sincerely apologized to students he'd yelled at to stop photographing while filming an outdoor scene for COFFEE PRINCE. He was busting his hump on the take, and surprised even himself with his vehemence. It bothered him for 10 years that he didn't get to apologize that day, and this was his chance. His encouragement to young people to let their energy flow and not hesitate and stifle themselves was really touching and heartfelt.

Interviewer Ms. Paik Ji Yeon did a lovely job. Her warm conversational style and sincerity were a refreshing switch from some of the clueless and confrontational interrogations I've seen on US TV. Forty-five minutes well spent. The aloha in the air during their conversation was refreshing and palpable.

It was a blessing to be able to see and hear it thanks to the volunteer(s) who prepared English subtitles. What a wonderful gift.

I already like Gong Yoo as an actor. After hearing him speak and observing his demeanor, I appreciate this humble and talented person even more.

Hi, Pearl...

Great minds, etc., etc., re: JUST FRIENDS

I recently rewatched ARANG AND THE MAGISTRATE, and looked around for other roles by Yeon Woo-Jin besides the emotionally gridlocked Joo-Wal. Bingo! Took a gat-free break from His Joseon Angstness for the romp that is JUST FRIENDS.

Totally concur with your comments. Min-Soo smooches up a storm, too. A 180-degree departure from Joo-Wal.

I watched it at DramaCool -- which had a BTS/interview appended. Alas, there are no English subtitles for the latter segment.

http://dramacool.to/just-friends-2009--episode-1.html

Re: ANTIQUE

I watched it for for Kim Jae-Wook, whom I loved as enigmatic Waffelmeister No Seon-Ki in COFFEE PRINCE... and only recently realized I've seen him in KINGDOM OF THE WINDS. What a chameleon.

The pacing was madcap, so reading subtitles was a challenge, and I'll likely rewatch. I cracked up at the three-way conversation in French (fromage a trois?) after Jean-Baptiste arrived. Alas, the baked temptations triggered a madeleine binge. Really.

The underlying mystery creeped me out.

The trio of schoolgirls looked familiar -- and then I recognized them as the Kim triplets, aka Infinity of Sound, who were terrific in HYANG DAN (epic 2-part spoof of Chun-Hyang). I love their music performed on traditional instruments.

Cheers!
